How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car Internationally?

24 June 2026

"How much does it cost to ship a car internationally?" is the first question almost everyone asks us — and the honest answer is: it depends. As a guide, most international car shipments cost between $1,000 and $5,000 by sea, with the majority of standard cars on well-served routes falling in the $1,500–$3,500 range. Air freight is a different category entirely, typically starting around $5,000 and rising well beyond that for long-haul routes. Below, we explain exactly what drives the number so you can budget accurately and avoid surprises.

What Determines the Cost of Shipping a Car?

There is no single flat rate for international vehicle shipping because the price is built up from several independent variables. The same car can cost twice as much to ship on one route as on another. These are the factors that move the price:

  • Shipping method — RoRo, container or air freight, in ascending order of cost
  • Route and distance — the origin and destination ports, and how well-served that lane is
  • Vehicle size and weight — a compact hatchback costs far less than a large SUV or van
  • Whether you share or take a full container — co-loading splits the cost; sole use does not
  • Door-to-door vs port-to-port — inland collection and delivery add to the base freight
  • Season and demand — freight rates fluctuate with shipping capacity and time of year

Each of these is explained in more detail below.

How Shipping Method Affects Price

The method you choose is the single biggest lever on cost.

RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) is almost always the most economical way to ship a running vehicle. Because cars are simply driven on and off a purpose-built car carrier, handling is efficient and per-vehicle costs are low. On a well-served lane such as Dubai to Northern Europe, RoRo is typically the budget-conscious choice.

Container shipping carries a higher base cost because you are paying for the container itself. However, the price becomes very competitive when the container is shared — co-loading (LCL) splits the cost across several vehicles. For motorcycles and multiple-vehicle shipments, our custom double-deck loading often makes container shipping the most economical option per unit. A sole-use full container (FCL) is the premium choice for high-value, classic or exotic vehicles that warrant a sealed, dedicated space.

Air freight is the fastest method — door-to-door in days rather than weeks — but the most expensive, often several times the cost of sea freight. It is best reserved for competition vehicles, exceptionally valuable cars, or genuinely time-critical shipments.

How Route and Distance Affect Price

Distance matters, but the busyness of the route matters more. High-volume lanes between major ports — Dubai, Antwerp, Hamburg, New York, Los Angeles — benefit from frequent sailings and competitive carrier pricing. A less-served destination, or one requiring transhipment through a hub port, will cost more even if the straight-line distance is shorter.

The destination port also determines the local handling and customs charges you will face on arrival, which vary considerably from country to country.

How Vehicle Size and Condition Affect Price

Ocean freight for vehicles is priced largely on volume (and for some services, weight). A compact car occupies less space than a full-size SUV, pickup or van, and is priced accordingly. Oversized or modified vehicles — raised suspensions, roof tents, wide bodies — may not fit standard RoRo decks or containers and can attract surcharges.

Non-running vehicles cost more to ship than running ones, because they cannot be driven onto a vessel and must be winched or forklifted into a container, which requires extra equipment and labour. Always declare a non-runner at the time of booking so the correct method and price are quoted.

The Additional Costs to Budget For

The freight quote is rarely the whole picture. To avoid surprises, budget for the following on top of the base shipping cost:

  • Import duties and taxes — charged by the destination country, often calculated on the vehicle's CIF value (cost + insurance + freight). The UAE applies 5%; other countries vary widely, with some exceeding 100%.
  • Destination port handling and terminal fees — unloading, storage and documentation charges levied at the arrival port
  • Customs clearance and brokerage — the cost of processing your vehicle through customs
  • Marine insurance — optional but strongly recommended; typically a small percentage of the vehicle's declared value
  • Inland transport — collection from your address and final delivery beyond the destination port, if you choose door-to-door
  • Registration and compliance — local roadworthiness inspection, modifications and registration fees once the vehicle has cleared customs

A reputable shipping company will set out these costs transparently rather than quoting only the headline freight figure. When you receive our quote, you see the full landed picture.

How to Reduce Your Car Shipping Cost

There are several legitimate ways to bring the cost down without cutting corners:

  • Share a container. Co-loading your vehicle with others (LCL) splits the container cost and is often dramatically cheaper than sole use for a single car.
  • Choose RoRo for a standard running car. If your vehicle does not need the extra protection of a sealed container, RoRo usually wins on price.
  • Be flexible on dates. Freight rates move with capacity. Avoiding peak periods and allowing some flexibility on the sailing can reduce the rate.
  • Opt for port-to-port if you can manage the ends. Arranging your own drop-off and collection at the ports saves the inland transport component.
  • Ship multiple vehicles together. If you are moving a collection, a full container or consolidated load lowers the per-vehicle cost significantly.

Why the Cheapest Quote Isn't Always the Best Value

It is tempting to choose purely on price, but the lowest headline figure sometimes hides costs that appear later — undisclosed destination charges, slow transit times, or a method that leaves a valuable vehicle more exposed than it should be. A quote that looks expensive may include door-to-door service, insurance and full customs handling, while a cheaper one may be port-to-port only.

Our approach is to give you an honest recommendation based on your specific vehicle, route and budget — not simply the most expensive option, and not a stripped-back figure that grows on arrival. For a standard car on a busy route we will tell you RoRo is the sensible choice; for a classic worth protecting we will explain why a container is worth the difference.

How to Get an Accurate Quote

Because the price depends on so many variables, the only way to know what your shipment will truly cost is a tailored quote. To prepare one quickly and accurately, our team needs:

  • The vehicle's make, model and year (and whether it runs)
  • The collection point (city or port) and the final destination
  • Your preferred shipping method, if you have one — or we will advise
  • Your timeline and whether you want port-to-port or door-to-door

With those details we can give you a clear, all-in figure covering freight and the associated charges, so you can budget with confidence. Contact us for a free, no-obligation quote and an honest recommendation on the best way to ship your vehicle.
